January has come and gone- how are you doing on your 2023 resolutions? Maybe you’re having doubts or maybe you never really set any. Maybe you want to do more!
I’m sharing 10 resolutions that I think are actually worth making. I think you can really improve your life with these and no, you don’t need to try and do them all! See what feels most needed or most practical for you. You can always add on another later.
Practice tech breaks - Whether it’s certain times of the day, 1 day a week or even a full week each season it’s really important to take screen breaks especially with social apps. I usually unplug more on Sundays and in the Summer I often take a longer break like 2 weeks.
Nurture community - You can do this in many different ways but some could be joining a church, finding a local hobby group, joining a mom meetup group etc Now more than ever we need to be fostering real in person relationships and it feels really good to connect with your local community.
Invest in your relationships - Whether it’s friendships, a marriage, your kids think about how you can improve a relationship. More quality time? Take a trip together? Check in more often? Couples therapy? Regular date nights or girls nights?
Read more books - This could be books in general or maybe you want to read more poetry or non fiction. Committing to 1 book a month might be a great place to start if you aren’t currently reading much. I love using the app Libby to take out books from my library! I often read in short spurts like 10min before my kids need me or 5min while putting my toddler to bed but it all adds up!
Conscious consumer - How you be more mindful and aware of the items you’re purchasing? You could pay more attention to where they are made and whether the workers are in safe conditions or paid fairly. You could try shopping less. You could use more reusable or recyclable items.
Stop multitasking - I used to think that multitasking was a good thing, like it showed I could handle more than one thing at a time, but learned later on that it actually means I’m doing more things not as well and am probably overwhelming myself. If this sounds like you then you could work on being more present. Maybe no phone when watching TV or setting a 10min timer to complete a task before you can switch to another.
Spend more time in nature - Study after study shows that more time spent in nature means you’ll be happier, healthier, less stressed and more grateful. Can you commit to a daily or weekly walk on a trail? Could you visit a new park each month? Sip your morning coffee outside?
Create morning/evening routines - I don’t thrive off of strict routines but I do love to have simple morning and evening routines. In the evening it’s turning off most lights, changing into comfy clothes, skincare routine and stories with my kids. In the morning it’s sitting for breakfast, catching up on news, getting dressed, skincare routine, journaling. A routine could be a quick 5min or it could be something loose spread out over hours. Think about what you want your mornings and evenings to look like and what you want to commit to daily.
Speak up for yourself (and others) - Finding your voice takes effort. Where can you use your voice to stand up for yourself or others? Do you need to set more boundaries? Go to PTA meetings? Take an allyship course? This is a great time to sit down with a journal and really brainstorm areas where you could be speaking up more.
Minimize your stuff - Less is more right? Start decluttering and finding a place for EVERYTHING in your home. I swear to you, your stress levels will for sure decrease. Here’s a great book to help you.
What resolutions would you add to the list?
I’m forever minimizing and decluttering around our house... it’s hard with a pack rat for a husband. 🤪
